Recently, I danced in a Flamenco theatre show in front of an audience of 250 people, and I completely messed up…! And from that mess, came this insight about navigating change that I just couldn’t wait to share with you. 

Leadership isn’t just something you do — it’s something you embody.

It’s how you show up in the face of change, challenge, and uncertainty.

It’s how you move forward after a setback.

It’s how you hold your vision when the path ahead is still unfolding.

And sometimes, the best metaphor for leadership doesn’t come from a boardroom — it comes from the stage!

At the beginning of my dance everything was going super well. Hundreds of hours of technical drills and umpteen rehearsals were producing great results!!

Until… the very end of the dance. Within the last couple of minutes of my number, I got distracted. 

And that’s when things started to unravel very quickly. It was like pulling on a loose thread in a sweater—what starts as a small tug turns into the whole thing coming apart in your hands.

To my horror, I realized that I was the ONLY person in the entire group of 12 dancers, who was literally dancing to the beat of her own drum. I had forgotten where I was in the choreography and I was doing something completely different than the rest of the group…! 

But the cool thing was, I didn’t panic. 

I kept dancing.

Because that’s all you can do when life or business throws the unexpected your way.

Just. Keep. Going.

Leadership is Learning to Dance with Change

As a semi-professional flamenco dancer, I know this truth with every cell in my body:

• A live performance is never perfect.
• A live performance is alive.

Costumes slip. Lighting shifts. Musicians improvise. Your heel hits the floor a half-second off.

And the show must go on.

Dancers don’t stop and panic. They adjust, adapt, and respond. They stay connected to the rhythm, to each other, and to themselves. That’s what brings the performance to life.

Leadership is the same.

Things rarely go 100% to plan. The market shifts. A team member leaves. A launch flops.

The question isn’t, “Did everything go right?”

The question is, “Can I stay present and respond with purpose?”

Embodying leadership means moving with change — not against it.
