How to Reach your Business Goals, without Knowing ALL the Details

Woman BeingYou want me to do what!!!!!????” I gasped at my coach.

“Do nothing.” She said with a detached, matter-of-fact tone.

“What do you mean do nothing? I’m a strategist! I like to be in control. I need to know where I’m going, why I’m doing it and exactly how I’m going to get there!” Was my response.

In a wise manner she replied, “Michela, you already know what you need to do. Your intention has already set things in motion. If you keep driving yourself so hard to keep doing, doing, doing you are not going to get there faster, and you might not get there at all. Michela, sometimes it’s about doing and other times it’s about being. You have to allow yourself to be, so that you can receive the inspiration, creativity, and information that will source the doing. Then you’ll be able to do, with so much more joy and lightness in your heart. Too much doing and not enough being, and you’ll end up exactly where you are, time and again – tired, burnt out, frustrated, and feeling like things are not in flow with your business.”

BEING.

The word reverberated in my brain.

An unfamiliar state for someone like me who has lived her life and measured her self-worth based on what she had accomplished, not based on who she was.

My experience is not an uncommon feature of the high achieving, goal-oriented, and dare I say – perfectionist women business owners who I’ve coached over the years. The struggles I’ve been through are the same ones they are experiencing. It takes one to know one…!

In my experience, when you cast a strong enough vision for yourself, and develop the right strategy for how to realize your vision, you can rest in the knowing that there is a roadmap to successfully reach your outcome. As a result, you don’t worry so much about needing to control the exact day-to-day tasks for getting there. You can hang out in a bit of ambiguity sometimes, and be okay with it. In business growth, there is no straight channel; it’s more of a mishmash of following a meandering stream one day and being swept up by a turbulent river the next.

So, the next time you find yourself hitting a wall in your business I invite you to take a step back and stop driving yourself so hard to find the answer. Stop digging your heels into the ground. Stop being driven by your need to control, your desire to please, your stubborn ego, or your yearning for self-worth. Step into the spaciousness of your vulnerability, get quiet enough to hear the whispers of your heart, and give yourself the permission to DO NOTHING. Wait for the magic to unfold. You’ll be amazed at what happens next.

Here are my tips for elegantly hanging out in ambiguity when you don’t know all the details for how to get to where you want to go:

  • Be fully present, without expectations
  • Let your emotions and feelings come and go, like waves breaking on a shoreline
  • Go with the flow, and be led just as much as being in the lead
  • Look for the opportunity in the not knowing
  • Be excited about the possibilities
  • Don’t catastrophize what might happen
  • Practice joy and gratitude in those moments of terror
  • Feel grateful that you are feeling vulnerable and alive
  • Love with your whole heart, even though there is no guarantee

It’s very counterintuitive to think that BEING is a requirement for achieving, especially for the logical left-brain types. But it’s true.

If you need some support during this process from someone who’s been there and come out the other side, reach out to me for a 45 minute (no obligation) consultation. I am more than happy to share a proven short-cut for reaching your business goals, with ease, grace and a more joyful spirit.
